Only 15 minutes from Perugia, the capital of Umbria, and a 30-minute ride from Tuscany, the closer surroundings can be easily explored by car. In addition, Castello Monticelli is located exactly between Rome and Florence, opening up plenty more possibilities for excursions in the wider area.
The castle itself has a rich history. While it is beautifully restored, you can not only feel its intriguing past but still see parts of it today: Admire frescoes in the chapel dating from 1315–19 by a painter well known to art historians, and explore Castello Monticelli in the footsteps of a great pope who lived here for several months back in 1450.
